Overview
The Comtrend PG-9172AC is a G.hn powerline adapter with built-in AC1200 dual-band WiFi. It uses your existing electrical wiring to carry network traffic, then creates a strong wireless access point and wired Ethernet port wherever you plug it in.
This is ideal for Canadian homes and small offices where Wi-Fi from the main router can’t reliably reach basements, garages, rental suites or far bedrooms, and where running new Ethernet cable would be expensive or messy.
Key Features & Benefits
- G.hn powerline up to 1200Mbps PHY – uses your home’s electrical wiring for high-speed backhaul, often more stable than Wi-Fi extenders.
- AC1200 dual-band WiFi 5 (2.4GHz & 5GHz) – delivers solid wireless coverage right where you have dead zones today.
- 1x Gigabit Ethernet port – hardwire a smart TV, console or desktop for lower-latency than Wi-Fi alone.
- OptimizAIR 2.0 technology – helps prioritize streaming and other high-demand traffic for smoother video performance.
- Secure at the push of a button – one-button pairing with AES 128-bit encryption between powerline adapters.
- Scales with your home – support for up to 16 compatible G.hn powerline adapters on one network.
- Simple, plug-and-play setup – plug into a wall outlet, pair to your G.hn network, then set up Wi-Fi via WPS or the web interface.
Canadian Use Cases
- Finished basements & media rooms – add Wi-Fi and Ethernet for streaming boxes and gaming consoles.
- Over-garage or backyard offices – keep video calls stable for remote work without pulling new cable.
- Older homes with thick walls – use existing electrical wiring to bypass concrete, brick or plaster that kills Wi-Fi.
- Rental suites & in-law spaces – extend internet to a secondary suite with an encrypted powerline link.
- Townhomes & multi-level homes – improve Wi-Fi coverage on upper floors without extra wiring.

Common Questions
-
Do I need another adapter for this to work?
Yes. A minimum of two G.hn powerline adapters is needed to create a working link. You can pair this PG-9172AC with another PG-9172AC, a PG-9172, PG-9172PT, PG-9172PoE, PG-9182PT or other compatible Comtrend G.hn powerline models. -
How is this different from a Wi-Fi extender?
Wi-Fi extenders repeat an already weak wireless signal. Powerline adapters send data over the electrical wiring instead, which can deliver more stable speeds and lower latency between floors or through dense construction. -
Will it work in older Canadian homes?
In many cases, yes. G.hn is designed to handle noisy, mixed-quality wiring, but actual speeds will depend on wiring condition, distance and what’s plugged into the same circuits. -
Can I customize the Wi-Fi name and password?
Yes. You can log into the web interface to change the SSID, password and other wireless settings, or use WPS with compatible devices.
