Overview
The Comtrend PG-9172PT is a G.hn powerline adapter with a built-in pass-through electrical outlet. It uses your existing electrical wiring to carry network traffic at up to 1200Mbps (PHY), then provides a Gigabit Ethernet port wherever you plug it in. This is ideal for Canadian homes and small offices that need a reliable wired connection in a basement, loft, garage or bonus room where Wi-Fi struggles.
Important: A minimum of two G.hn powerline adapters is required to create a working link. Use this single PG-9172PT as an add-on to an existing G.hn kit, or pair it with another PG-9172PT or compatible Comtrend G.hn adapter near your router.
Key Features & Benefits
- Up to 1200Mbps G.hn powerline backbone – turns your home’s electrical wiring into a high-speed network link. Actual throughput depends on wiring quality, distance and electrical noise.
- Pass-through AC outlet – plug the adapter into the wall, then plug a lamp, power bar or TV into the front outlet so you don’t lose a socket.
- 1 x Gigabit Ethernet port – delivers a stable, low-latency connection for smart TVs, game consoles, streaming boxes, desktops or network switches.
- Better than basic Wi-Fi extenders – G.hn powerline uses a wired path over electrical wiring, which is often more consistent for streaming and gaming between floors than repeated Wi-Fi signals.
- HomeGrid-certified G.hn – standards-based powerline technology designed to outperform older HomePlug AV adapters.
- Secure at the push of a button – AES 128-bit encryption between adapters with a one-button security/pairing process.
- Expandable network – support for up to 16 compatible Comtrend G.hn powerline adapters on one electrical network.
Canadian Use Cases
- Basement or bonus-room TV – give a smart TV or streaming box a wired connection using only existing outlets.
- Gaming setups – move your console or gaming PC away from the router without relying on laggy Wi-Fi extenders.
- Home offices – stabilize VPN and video calls in an upstairs or downstairs office where Wi-Fi is hit-and-miss.
- Rental suites & multi-level homes – extend internet into a secondary suite, loft, or finished attic via electrical wiring.
- Small business installs – connect POS terminals, back-office PCs or printers in rooms with power but no network drop.
How It Works
- Adapter A (PG-9172PT or another G.hn unit) plugs into a wall outlet near your modem/router and connects with an Ethernet cable.
- Adapter B (this PG-9172PT) plugs into a wall outlet where you need wired connectivity and connects to your device via its Gigabit Ethernet port.
- The adapters communicate over the electrical wiring to form a secure G.hn powerline link.

Common Questions
-
Can I use this by itself?
No. You need at least two G.hn powerline adapters to create a link. This PG-9172PT is ideal as an add-on unit for an existing G.hn network or kit. -
How is this different from the PG-9172PT-KIT?
The PG-9172PT-KIT includes two adapters (a complete starter kit). This product is a single PG-9172PT adapter for expanding or replacing units in a G.hn powerline network. -
Will it work in older Canadian homes?
In many cases, yes. G.hn is designed to handle noisy and mixed-quality wiring, but actual speeds depend on wiring condition, distance between outlets and what’s plugged into the same circuits. -
Is this better than a Wi-Fi extender?
Wi-Fi extenders repeat wireless signals and can add latency or cut throughput. A G.hn powerline adapter uses a wired path over electrical wiring, which is often more stable for streaming and gaming between floors or through dense construction.
